Kaleidoscope —— 《Boston Legal》

To be a lawyer is one of dream in my childhood, adolescence and even in adulthood. I admire the people with silver-tongue, especially when they are eloquent in public and use their tirade fighting for justice. But for some reasons, first it might be ignorance in the adolescence, then is laziness in adulthood which is just like what Dr Scott said “the original sin of people is laziness”. Clearly I have committed this original sin and that’s why the dream is always a dream to me, never comes to true.

On the other hand, I also hate the rules, the systems, the so-called ethics and moral that are pervasive in the masses. In other words, I hate 僵化的道德捍卫者, 制度维护者,墨守陈规者,who never cross the line even for the purpose of rightness. Sometimes, they abide by the laws, the regulations and the so called ethics just for their own benefits not for justice. No one can deny each human being has darker side in their nature. But, please, don’t cloak it with more decent disguise. That’s why I like Alan Shore more than any lawyer in this series of opera soap. I like his flexibility, I like the way he defends for his clients and help the lightweights in this nasty, snobby society, I like his challenge to authority, I like his facile and persuasive speech, I like the aghast expression he puts on others’ face, I like the compassion hided under his cynical skin, I enjoy the same feeling as much as him that people both love and hate him. Without him, the lawyer’s world is so boring. And, the tolerance, it is the most appreciated quality in his personality. Just like Hendrik van Loon used the explanation from “Encyclopedia Britain” in his book: “Tolerance is the sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own”, It is tolerance let Alan becomes an open, patient, and sympathetic guy and gives him more freedom and more room to defend for the real benefits of human being.

Besides, their opening and closing are wonderful, you can sense the little sparkles of wisdom and laugh from time to time. And, you learn from it how to compromise to some extent in order to get closer to fact, truth and justice or win-win solution. There are a lot of grey areas in real world, it is not always black and white! We must live with them.

Furthermore, it reveals even human being has darker side in their nature, still, there exist bright side too. We all are the mixture of devils and angels. Sometimes, somewhere, someone heed the call of grace, surprised all of us. That’s the old saying coming from: ”There is hope”. Last but not least, believe, how heavy the word is! Being a lawyer, you are frequently in such dilemma that you have to defend for what you can’t believe, you can’t be sure one hundred percent. A hard career, isn’t it? Sometimes you have to sway between career moral and human moral. When it comes to your call, what’s your decision?
